8 Wastes

The 8 Wastes is a concept developed by Toyota in the early 1990s to identify and eliminate sources of waste in the production process. The 8 Wastes are: Overproduction, Waiting, Transportation, Processing, Inventory, Motion, Defects, and Underutilized Talent. Overproduction is the production of more than what is needed, when it is not needed. Waiting is when production is delayed due to a lack of resources or parts. Transportation is the unnecessary movement of materials or parts between processes. Processing is the unnecessary use of resources or time in the production process. Inventory is the accumulation of materials or parts that are not needed. Motion is the unnecessary movement of people or equipment during the production process. Defects are the production of products that do not meet the desired quality standards. Underutilized Talent is the failure to utilize the full potential of people or machines. The 8 Wastes are used to identify and eliminate sources of waste in the production process, allowing for increased efficiency and cost savings.
