Domain Name System (Dns)

Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It is the standard way that domain names are looked up and translated into IP addresses. Most Internet users never need to know about the DNS because their computer’s operating system automatically handles the task of connecting to the DNS servers.

The root zone of the DNS is maintained by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is responsible for coordinating these unique identifiers across the world. The DNS root zone contains the addresses of the top-level domain name servers, which are the authoritative name servers for their respective domains.

The major components of the Domain Name System are:

– Domain names – Human-readable names used to identify resources on the Internet

– Domain name servers – Computers that store mapping information between domain names and IP addresses

– Resolvers – Clients that query domain name servers to resolve domain names to IP addresses
