Particulate Matter 10 Micrometers (Pm 10)

Particulate Matter 10 Micrometers (Pm 10)

A particulate matter 10 micrometers (PM10) is a tiny particle that can enter your lungs and cause health problems. Common sources of PM10 include wood smoke, dust from construction sites, and ash from wildfires. When inhaled, these particles can cause short-term effects like coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing. They can also aggravate existing respiratory conditions like asthma. Long-term exposure to PM10 has been linked to heart disease and premature death.

Because of its potential health risks, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates levels of PM10 in the air. The EPA has set a National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for PM10 of 150 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3). States and localities must take steps to reduce levels of PM10 below this standard.
