Refrigerant

A refrigerant is a substance or mixture, usually a fluid, used in a heat pump and refrigeration cycle. In most cycles it undergoes phase transitions from a liquid to a gas and back again. Refrigerants are used in air conditioners, heat pumps, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators. The primary purpose of a refrigerant is to transfer heat from one area to another. Refrigerants are designed to absorb heat from the air inside a refrigerator or air conditioner and release it outside. The most common refrigerants are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). CFCs are being phased out due to their ozone-depleting properties, while HCFCs and HFCs are becoming more popular as replacements. Refrigerants must be chosen carefully to ensure they are safe and efficient for the intended application.
