BMS Controls Glossary

A C Split Unit

A split unit air conditioner is a type of air conditioning system that utilizes two separate components to cool a space. The two components are an outdoor unit, which houses the compressor, condenser, and expansion valve, and an indoor unit, which contains the evaporator and fan. The outdoor unit is usually installed on the exterior of the building, while the indoor unit is installed in the interior. The two components are connected by a conduit that contains the refrigerant lines, power cables, and drain lines. The outdoor unit is responsible for compressing and condensing the refrigerant, while the indoor unit is responsible for evaporating the refrigerant and circulating the cooled air. Split unit air conditioners are popular in both residential and commercial applications due to their energy efficiency, quiet operation, and ease of installation. Additionally, they are more aesthetically pleasing than traditional window units, as they are installed on the exterior of the building and not visible from the interior.
