Carbon Monoxide (Co)

Carbon Monoxide (Co)

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced when fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, propane, or coal are burned. CO is also produced by car engines and other combustion engines.

When inhaled, CO prevents the blood from delivering oxygen to the body’s tissues and organs. CO poisoning can cause death.

The leading cause of CO poisoning deaths in the United States is from home heating systems. Other causes include:

-Gas-powered generators

-Cars left running in enclosed spaces such as garages

-Fireplaces

-Charcoal grills
