In its most basic form, a building management system (BMS) is a computer-based controls system installed in commercial, industrial and institutional buildings to help manage and operate the building more efficiently.

The BMS typically consists of hardware and software that collect data from various sensors installed throughout the building, such as temperature and humidity sensors, and use this data to control the building’s HVAC systems. The BMS can also be used to control other building systems, such as lighting, security and fire safety systems.

In addition, the BMS may also include features that allow occupants to control aspects of their environment, such as adjusting the temperature in their individual office or workspace.
