BMS Controls Glossary

Rooftop Unit

A rooftop unit (RTU) is a self-contained, climate-controlled system that is typically installed on the roof of a building. It is used to regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality of the interior of the building. RTUs are typically powered by electricity, and they use a combination of fans, heaters, and air conditioners to maintain the desired temperature and air quality. RTUs are often used in commercial and industrial buildings, such as warehouses, factories, and office buildings. They are also used in residential buildings, such as apartment complexes and single-family homes. RTUs are a great way to save energy, as they can be programmed to only operate when needed. They are also relatively easy to install and maintain, making them a cost-effective solution for many buildings.
