A building management system (BMS) is a computerized system that controls and monitors the mechanical and lighting systems in a building. The purpose of a BMS is to optimize the use of energy, improve the comfort of building occupants, and ensure the safety of the occupants and the structure itself.
A building’s mechanical systems can include its HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system, as well as its plumbing, electrical, and security systems. The term “building management system” is often used interchangeably with “energy management system” or “HVAC control system.”
While most BMS’s are used in commercial buildings, such as office buildings, hotels, hospitals, and retail stores, they can also be used in industrial facilities and warehouses. In fact, any type of building that has multiple mechanical systems can benefit from a BMS.
