Mixed Air Temperature (Mat)

Mixed Air Temperature (Mat)

The term “mixed air temperature” (MAT) is used to describe the temperature of a mixture of outdoor air and recirculated air within a building. The mixed air temperature is typically measured at the damper inlet or outlet of a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system.

The mixed air temperature is important because it represents the temperature of the airstream that will be delivered to the conditioned space by the HVAC system. The setpoint for the MAT is typically lower than the indoor temperature setpoint to provide a margin of safety against overcooling the space.

The MAT setpoint varies depending on the type of HVAC system and its controls. For example, in a constant volume system without supply air reset, the MAT setpoint would be equal to the indoor temperature setpoint minus the cooling coil differential setting.

In avariable volume system with supply air reset, the MAT setpoint would be reset based on changes in outdoor air temperature. Mixed Air Temperature (Mat) Definition: The temperature of a mixture of outdoor air and recirculated indoorair, typically measured at theninlet oroutlet of an HVAC system’s cooling coil
