BMS Controls Glossary

Fault Detection Diagnostics (Fdd)

Fault Detection Diagnostics (Fdd)

Fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) is the process of identifying faults in a system and determining the root cause of those faults. FDD can be used to improve the performance of systems by reducing downtime, improving quality, and reducing costs. Fault detection diagnostics definition Building management systems (BMS) are computer-based systems that monitor and control the mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems in a building.

A BMS typically includes a network of controllers, sensors, and actuators that work together to maintain optimal conditions within a space. BMS control systems use various protocols to communicate with devices on the network. These protocols include LonWorks, BACnet, Modbus, and others. Each protocol has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it is important for facilities managers to understand the capabilities of each before choosing a BMS for their facility.

LonWorks is a proprietary protocol developed by Echelon Corporation. It is widely used in industrial applications due to its high degree of interoperability; LonWorks devices can communicate with each other regardless of manufacturer. However, LonWorks is not as commonly used in commercial buildings due to its relative complexity and lack of an open standard. BACnet is an open standard protocol maintained by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
