Intelligent Building Management Systems

Intelligent Building Management Systems

An intelligent building management system (IBMS) is a computerized system that helps facility managers monitor and operate a building’s mechanical and electrical equipment. It is also known as a Building Automation System (BAS).

The main purpose of an IBMS is to make a building more energy efficient by automating tasks such as HVAC, lighting, security, and fire/life safety systems. In some cases, an IBMS can also be used to provide occupants with comfort and convenience features such as room scheduling, wayfinding, and package delivery notification.

An IBMS typically consists of several smaller subsystems that each manage a specific type of equipment or perform a specific task. For example, a lighting control system would manage the building’s lights while a security system would manage the building’s security cameras and access control devices.

In order for an IBMS to be effective, it must be able to collect data from the various subsystems and use that data to make decisions. For example, the data collected by the security system might be used to automatically turn off the lights in areas that are not being used. The data collected by the HVAC system might be used to adjust the temperature in response to occupancy levels.

The decision-making capabilities of an IBMS are often enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies. These technologies allow the IBMS to “learn” from past experience
