In building automation, a building management system (BMS), also known as a facility management system (FMS), is a computer-based application that controls and monitors the heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting and other systems in commercial, industrial or residential buildings.
A BMS consists of software and hardware that collects data from various devices within a building, such as temperature sensors, humidity sensors and energy meters. The data is then used to control the building’s systems, such as HVAC and lighting. The main goal of a BMS is to optimize the performance of a building’s systems while maximizing energy efficiency. A BMS can also be used to monitor the safety and security of a building.
